The iconic casino card game of Baccarat is associated with an air of mystery and intrigue since its invention in 1400s Italy. After years of being highly popularised in Europe, Asia, and America, Baccarat has now captured the attention of millions of people from all over the world.
Dubbed “baccara” by its inventor Felix Falguiere, the name means zero in Italian, which is what all of the tens and face cards are each worth.
New players may be intimidated by the secretive nature of this game, but this list is here to help you gain a deeper understanding of the game and hopefully allow you to make more consistent future wins.
Never Place Tie Bets
Often referred to by enthusiasts as a “sucker’s bet,” betting on a tie is more likely than not to result in a dud game. Players win by having the highest score within their 2-3 card hand, but if both players have the same hand total, it is considered a “push”, or tie.
In the instance of having bet on a tie, you will get whatever you bet back, but you won’t receive any winnings (unless your opponent and the dealer have the same hand, but this is an extremely rare occurrence).
Factor in the Banker’s Cut
If you understand basic baccarat gameplay (and casino games in general), you will know that the casino hosting the game will always take a cut of the proceedings. Also called the house edge, it is what keeps them in business and allows them to facilitate the game itself.
Reasonable as it may be, you need to remain aware of what the exact cut is at the house you are playing at. The standard cut sits at around 5%, but some casinos will try to push it up to 20%. Always aim to play at the casino with the lowest commission in order to improve your odds.
Account for Luck
You can strategize all you like, but at the end of the day, baccarat – like many of its sibling casino games – orbits around the elements of luck and chance. Use this aspect of the game to keep you on your toes and make calculated, intuitive risks when you feel the timing is right.
Also bear it in mind as a means to reign you in when tempted to try out a wild or poorly researched strategy. Strictly speaking, there is always a chance you can win and a chance you can lose.
Negotiate a Loss Rebate
If you are very confident in your relationship with the casino that you are playing at, consider negotiating a loss rebate with your dealer or casino regular at the time, although remember that they are more likely to comply if you are a regular player who frequently makes larger bets.
Some casinos will allow for a negotiation of perks that result in you giving up something else in exchange for a lower house edge. This can make a tremendous difference in your odds as a player.
